DJ Chairman Moe Appreciation Post
March 31, 2025 - 6:00 am

DJ ChairmanMoe has been a part of the KBCS family since 2009, when his first show “Recycled Music” made its debut. At the time, the theme was Cover Tunes, and his show featured the music you loved, just not the way you remember hearing it. It was a good run but the show seemed to lose a little steam. In 2017, a format change was due and (at the encouragement of KBCS management) a new show format was launched under the title, Chairman Moe, with a focus on 80’s music, deep-diving into the world of post punk, early goth, power pop, garage/jangle and anything else that doesn’t typically appear on a AI-generated playlist from a corporate service.
Ever since that moment, it’s all about the 80’s, reliving those days, bringing back those moments that still live in our hearts, that bring a sly smile to our faces – the kind of smile that makes your kids ask “what’s so funny?” and you have to decide between brushing off the question or getting into a somewhat embarrassing story that will either shock your child into silence or develop within them a previously unknown sense of awe about who you are.
What song or album do you most identify with, which inspired your energy to be a DJ?
It sounds like a goof, but it truly was the TV show “WKRP in Cincinnati” that opened his eyes to the idea of being a DJ, the thought of getting to play music as a job seemed too good to be true. He even volunteered as a DJ for his high school dances, parties, and local youth groups while growing up.
Then, he found out that Bellevue Community College was offering a “Basic Broadcasting” course as part of their continuing studies – when he finished the course, he put together his demo and was offered a time slot to present Recycled Music. it was Thursday mornings at 3 AM, a humble beginning to be sure, but it was a start.
There isn’t a single album that inspired his love for music, but K-Tel compilations were a huge help in developing his varied music tastes. (You may know these by their more recent name, the “That’s What I Call Music” collection.) It was an easy way to get your hands on a lot of songs, all in one handy location.
Your most recent concert:
My last concert was seeing Kiss at Climate Pledge, at the end of 2023. I’ve been spending more time checking out local music at places like the Kraken pub, Central Saloon, Tractor Tavern; it’s a great night out with bands that you can get to know and appreciate. I try to share on my socials as much live, local stuff as I can – nothing beats live music.
Recent Feature film or a Favorite film:
My favorite films are far from recent; I’m a fan of Casablanca, especially when you read the story of how it was made and almost never happened. I also enjoy the original Star Wars trilogy (the others are fine/acceptable, really) and I’m a big Godzilla fan – watching him wreak havoc is a relaxing way to spend an evening.
What album do you love or really enjoy that might surprise your listeners?
While I love the stuff I play on my show, with the loud guitars and all, I really enjoy listening to ABBA. They’re so much more than some kind of bubble-gum pop phenomenon…when you get past the melodies and harmonies (which are awesome), and delve into their lyrics and themes, you can see how they get into some really dark areas.
A favorite quote or song that keeps you going:
My favorite song quote is from The Redwood Plan, a Seattle band that broke up awhile ago but these words still ring true:
“Don’t let the little things blend into everything.”
It’s a nice reminder when things start to get a little overwhelming…
As for a song, that changes on a semi-regular basis – in this first part of 2025, I’ve been revisiting a lot of Rage Againat the Machine, Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, System of a Down, Black Flag, The Clash, etc, etc…you see a theme, yes?
But I also found this power pop cover of Chappell Roan’s “Good Luck, Babe” by a band called Senses – it’s got a ton of energy and hard to resist.
