"Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud, A Memoir," by Dr. Cornel West. FeaturesQ: What do protesters and Muslims have in common?A: Both groups are on government watch lists. Before the World Trade Organization demonstrations in Seattle, only a few thousand names were on these lists, mainly foreigners. Now, millions of U. S. citizens are on the lists, and not because they are criminals. Instead many of them are cited for their religious or political views. Last month the National Lawyers’ Guild (NLG) held its annual convention in Seattle and honored the city on its tenth anniversary of the WTO. David Griffith was there and filed this report from a panel discussion on government surveillance. More information can be found at NLG Seattle Chapter’s site. Tune into Community Radio KBCS and One World Report next week as we examine the legacy of the 1999 World Trade Organization protests with a whole week of special programs highlighting the grassroots participants and organizers of that historic event. That’s our WTO Anniversary Protest coverage titled, “N30: It Still Matters.” For the full schedule, check out www.KBCS.fm. First, Dr. Cornel West, known as one of the nation’s most outspoken and provocative intellectuals. He draws from such diverse traditions as the African American Baptist Church, socialism and the blues. He may be best known for his book “Race Matters,” which many consider a classic on race and justice in America. His latest book is titled “Brother West, Living and Loving Out Loud, A Memoir” and is a departure from his usual examinations of race and politics in America. KBCS Host Sonya Green spoke with Dr. West over the phone about the book. To know more about Dr. Cornel West, follow him on his website, Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace. Earlier this month, the Reverend Alan Storey spoke at various progressive churches throughout the Puget Sound. Reverend Storey is an ordained minister of the Methodist Church of South Africa. For eleven years he served one of the most multiracial Christian congregations in that country. His experience in the transition from the Apartheid government has been highly influential in his social justice ministry. One World Report Executive Producer Joaquin Uy sat down with him at the KBCS studios for this interview. You can listen to Rev. Alan Storey's Holden Village Bible study at Holden's audio archives. (Encore Presentation) Most of Puget Sound's inhabitants live within two miles of the mighty Duwamish River. And in 2001, the Environmental Protection Agency declared this river a highly polluted Superfund Site. Restoring this important waterway to health in the face of years of industrial abuse is the subject of this week's encore edition of Green A.C.R.E Radio. Reporter: Martha Baskin Download full story (right-click, save target as) In Pakistan, things fall apart; the center cannot hold In a development this week from Pakistan, Democracy Now’s Jeremy Scahill revealed that the private military firm Xe, formerly known as Blackwater is part of a covert operation planning the assassination and kidnapping of Taliban and al-Qaeda suspects in Pakistan. KBCS reporter Tom Herriman was recently there and has this report. We conclude this week’s One World Report with a commentary from Seattle-based writer and blogger Sable Verity who focuses on issues directly impacting minority families. A controversial cell phone application has Sable wondering about the ethics and legality of our rapidly growing mobile computing technology. The revolution may not be televised, but will it be available on your smart phone? Download full story (right-click, save target as) Credits Benjamin Ernst is the managing producer.
