Initiative to Prevent New Seattle Jail Fails
Last year King County announced it was terminating the contract for housing Seattle’s felony inmates in 2012. With virtually no public debate, Seattle City Council voted unanimously to start the process for building a new jail. But a small group of concerned citizens were convinced Seattle didn’t need a new jail and formed a grass roots coalition to have the issue placed on this November’s ballot. The organizing was led by Tim Harris, executive director and founder of local homeless advocacy group Real Change. Initiative 100 also known as the Initiative 100was endorsed by dozens of local organizations and prominent individuals. Yesterday was the deadline for gathering 18,000 signatures to qualify for the general election. One World Report’s David Griffith has the details from Seattle City Hall.

For over 30 years the collective housed dozens of activists, and served as a hub for local radical politics. One World Report’s Benjamin Cleaves spoke with several former residents and brings us this story.
