Voices of Diversity Talks About Pacific Northwest Natives Struggling for Federal Recognition
Last night on the KBCS program Voices of Diversity, Joaquin Uy hosted a discussion on the ongoing struggles of Pacific Northwest Natives for federal recognition. During the colonization of the Pacific Northwest, the U.S. government signed multiple treaties with Pacific Northwest tribes, but rarely honored them. Today, many Native people are still fighting for the minimal rights the treaties supposedly ensured. You’ll hear from Duwamish Tribe Chairwoman Cecile Hansen who is also the great-great-grand niece of Chief Seattle. You’ll also hear from Chinook Nation Chairman Ray Gardner, Snohomish Tribe Chairman Mike Evans and Steilacoom Tribe Chairman Danny Marshall. This excerpt from that discussion was edited for broadcast by Havens Tipps.
