Roberto Maestas Interview
Roberto Maestas has been a community organizer most of his life, as a 14-year-old negotiating with the boss for his fellow field hands, or on behalf of minority students when he was a teacher at Franklin High School in the 1960s. Maestas founded Seattle’s El Centro de la Raza, a center for people of all races, and is now its executive director. Here he shares his thoughts on Obama's inauguration, reflecting on the decades of struggle to make America live up to its promise.

Joshua Welter Interview
Joshua Welter is the lead organizer for Washington Community Action Network, or WA-CAN, the largest grassroots lobbying organization in Washington State. Growing up in Washington, DC. Welter’s parents first introduced him to community efforts by taking him to anti-nuclear proliferation rallies. Motivated by the belief that we are all better off, when each of us is better off. Welter, here, shares his thoughts on what community organizing will mean under an Obama administration.

Cleansing the White House
Comedian Kate Clinton came up with the idea to "sage" the White House before President Barack Obama and his family moved in. Burning sage is a Native American ritual used to cleanse an area of evil spirits. The original plan was to meet up at Washington’s Du Pont Circle, then march down Connecticut Avenue to the White House. The D.C. Police had other plans.

And Now A Word from Congressman Jim McDermott (7th District-D)
On Wednesday morning, Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell held a coffee for Washington residents attending the inauguration. About 200 people showed up for the event held in the Dirksen Senate Office Building. Seattle area Representatives Jim McDermott, Jay Inslee, and Dave Reichert were also present. Here, McDermott raises his coffee cup to the new administration.

Aileen Foster Interview
Now we hear from Philadelphia resident Aileen Foster who traveled to Washington, D.C. for the inauguration. She spoke about her hopes for the development of the nation’s cities under an Obama administration, what it will mean for young people to have Obama as a role model, and what it meant for her to join in the inaugural celebration.

Kathya Alexander Letter to Her Father
Finally, we hear from Kathya Alexander, an author, actor and playwright reciting a letter she wrote recently to her deceased father, Reverend Louis Alexander, a Black man who did not live to see Barack Obama elected president. She reflects on the world her father knew, one of her own childhood memories, and wonders what her father’s political thoughts were then, and might have been today.
